Ivory Trade Store -- Chinese Ivory

The art of ivory carving in China dates back to the neolithic era with many finds dug in excavations all around the region.

In later periods from mid Shang (1600-1027 BC) through to the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368 AD), ivory was already imported on a regular basis from India and Africa and many artifacts, both useful and decorative were created, many surviving to be displayed in museums and private collections today.

Most of what is available in the market today are later pieces from the Ming (1368-1644) through to the Qing (Chien-Lung) (1644-1911) dynasties and to modern day - a flourish in artistic capabilities and execution is noted and from mid Ming period we have an ‘explosion’ of quality carvings with various subject matters aimed more at the decorative aspect than the practical items for use - usable carvings were still made but even those with more investment in decor to make them more appealing these would be fans, calligraphy accessories, cups, bowls, pots and boxes for various uses.

The subject matters done where either mythological (deities, mythical beats, the 18 Lohans (Arhats), the 8 immortals and famous sages) or from reality (emperor/empress, court officials, beauties, warriors and animals)
